Uranus FAQ

Do your recordings Kick Ass?
Why yes. Yes they do.

Does $250/day include a recording engineer?
No. $250/day covers the cost of the studio, use of studio instruments, and blank CDs. Compare studios and rates and you’ll find we offer a great recording value.

Is there an hourly rate?
Weekdays only I offer an hourly rate of $25. I understand that most people have real jobs and can’t record all day during the week. I’m sure it’s a drag. I wouldn’t know. I’m sure you understand that some restrictions apply, such as a four-hour minimum. Again, this $25/hr does not include an engineer.

Do you require a deposit?
Yes, 25% deposit is required when booking sessions.

What is the difference between a Producer and an Engineer?
Producers are involved in all aspects of the recording process including engineering, and are valued for their creative input. From pre-production, song selection, arrangement, recording and mixing, to coaxing performances from difficult band members, a producer understands and is committed to all of the intricacies of your recording.

A Recording Engineer handles the gear and all technical aspects of recording and mixing.

Can you recommend an affordable World Class Producer?
Contact me with your project details and I can help find the right producer or engineer for your style and budget. And visit our Producers/Engineers page to connect with the best producers and engineers in Arizona.

How much do engineers and Producers cost?
Producers sometimes charge a per song rate that includes pre-production, recording and mixing. Producer rates vary depending on the complexity of the project (number of instruments, schedule, etc).

Engineers start at $20/hour. We have freelance engineers available and can often put sessions together within 24 hours of first contact. The average cost for a full day at Uranus is $450 including engineer.

Can we bring our own engineer?
Freelance professionals are always welcome. My studio is designed for easy setup and after a brief orientation, qualified engineers will have no problem running sessions on their own.

What is the difference between a demo and a record?
A demo is a relatively simple recording intended to demonstrate a song or artist’s ability. A record is intended for commercial release, and features the best possible performances and production, with all the bells and whistles.

Can we record live?
Anything’s possible. Our live room sounds great and we have an iso-booth and gobos (partitions) to help isolate guitar amps or drums. We recommend hiring a producer that can help you map out a strategy that will make the most of your time in the studio.

What are the hidden costs of recording?
Strings, drum heads, a Hard Drive for storing session files, instrument rental, food and drinks, transportation and any hotel costs.

Do you have a PA?
We have a professional PA with monitors.

Are you a rehearsal studio?
Touring professionals who need a place to hold up in Phoenix are always welcome. Having the Brewery next door helps make this an excellent place for a long day of work. Also, I have arrangements with some of my regular clients, so nothing is out of the question.

Do you have a drum kit?
No. But here’s where you can rent one.

What instruments do you have?
Electric, acoustic, and Bass guitars, with guitar amps and pedals. Also, we have an assortment of percussion such as tambourines and shakers. There is no extra cost for use of studio instruments.

Do you have an analog recorder?
No. Uranus Recording is all digital.

What is your recording format?
Our Digital Audio Workstation features: Pro Tools HD 2 Accel, Digidesign 192 I/O, Apogee Big Ben Master Clock, Mac G5, 23 inch Widescreen Display. Plugins include: Waves Diamond Bundle, Antares Auto Tune, Komplete 5, Vocalign, Isotope Mastering Program, and more

Do you have a Pro Tools control surface?
Yes. We have a Digidesign Command 8.

Can you recommend a Hard Drive for session files?
We recommend a 80gb firewire400 hard drive from Other World Computing.

Can we get a studio tour?
Sure, but it will require advance set up and may be conducted by studio interns.

Are studio internships available?
We work with the Conservatory of Recording Arts and Sciences in Tempe, AZ. Upon completion of internships, CRAS graduates are ready to run sessions at Uranus and often available for only $20/hr. Enroll at CRAS and ask your counselor about interning for me.

Where are you located?
Near ASU in Tempe, AZ. On 8th Street between Rural and McClintock, next to Four Peaks Brewery.

Is there really a Five Star Brewery next to the studio?
As a matter of fact, yes. Four Peaks Brewery is conveniently located next door and features excellent food, cute waitresses, and the best Micro Brews in Arizona. Four Peaks is very cool and greatly adds to the studio vibe.

Is Uranus Recording the same thing as Mayberry Studios?
I changed the studio name from vague and accidental Mayberry Studios to Uranus Recording of Tempe in 2004.

Are the Gin Blossoms still together?
We play all the time. And I am happy to meet with potential clients on the road. Checkout the Gin Blossoms schedule.
